This is the rock and roll future of yesteryear that never was—and nobody wanted.

It is an intergalactic age of cowboys, outlaws and bandits playing on an interstellar stage. It is a time of hyper-capitalism and a cut-throat gig economy. Unreliable trash-heaps carry scrappy underdogs to their next gig, and corporation freighters lumber across the horizon laden with an empire’s bounty.

These are the music-fuelled, moon-age daydreams of a rebel space age.

These are your ORBITAL BLUES.

A playtest/quickstart for an RPG about SAD SPACE COWBOYS based on the Best Left Buried engine. Combining the best elements of Old School RPGs and Storygames, this 60 page PDF features:

  • Six premade characters for the crew of the Unchained Melody, each with their own Troubles
  • All the rules you need to play
  • A short adventure, An Unchained Melody, set in the Sutler System.

This free version is intended as a playtest kit. We'll launch the full game via Kickstarter in March, with more art, rules for creating your own ships and characters, and advice for running Orbital Blues.

To give feedback on the playtest, start a discussion with us on the SoulMuppet Discord, tweet at @SamSleney or @JellyMuppet, or email us at info@soulmuppet.co.uk. Keep an eye out for the Kickstarter in March/April.

Is there any chance of a Pages version of this being offered? The spreads are great on my desktop, but I read a lot on mobile/iPad.

Sorry if this is a huge ask, I don't know enough about design/layout of PDFs.

EDIT: Just realized that the corebook PDF actually includes this same adventure; no need for my request above. Thanks!

Looking forward to more “blue collar / lo fi sci fi”, especially if the final layout keeps getting polished! Less psionics and FTL, more asteroid miners trying to make a buck in an impoverished solar system.

we're definitely shooting towards that approach. the layout isn't being 'polished' so much as completely done again from scratch!
